Extra Ordinary Man is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language action comedy film written and directed by Vakkantham Vamsi. It is produced by Sreshth Movies and Ruchira Entertainment. It stars Nithiin and Sreeleela. The film was released theatrically on 8 December 2023, and received mixed to negative reviews from critics.

Plot

Abhinay, aka Abhi, a new recruit in the gang of Selvamani, a drug lord and musical buff, narrates his life story and how he became a famous junior artist. Abhi is a young man who likes acting like other people since his childhood. He grows up with a dream of being a mainstream actor and lives in Hyderabad with his dad Somsasekhar and his mom Usha. He then meets a woman named Likitha during a traffic jam one day. They both share a close relationship and Abhi gets a job at her company, where he becomes the CEO. During the events, he got a chance to act as a hero in a film by his friend Rakesh. But, Somashekar breaks his leg and relies on Abhi to do his jobs while he is injured. He resigned from Likitha’s company and left his family and his girlfriend to act in a movie, his longtime goal. As a result of this, Likitha gets angry at Abhi, and Somasekhar beats up Abhi as a result of him resigning. Suddenly, Rakesh changed his mind and removed Abhi from the movie.

Abhi, heartbroken, went to a dhaba to drink. While drinking, some rowdies came there and asked everyone to go aside as their boss was coming. Abhi moves aside, but still, the goons ask him to back off completely as their boss is coming, which triggers Abhi, so that everyone in his reel and real life asks him to move back and thrash the goons. The goons boss arrived there, and Abhi started an encounter with him. In a turn of events, he comes to know that he is the brother of the villain, which surprises Abhi. Additionally, he also learns all the events occurring were as per the movie script. Abhi trashes the goons very badly after a very tough encounter between them. Following that, he assumes that this is all God’s will, so he doesn’t act in the movie and he follows the written script and recreates it in real life.

After that, he confronts the villain, who is named Nero, using SI Sai Nath "Saitan" as his pseudonym as per the script, and challenges him to defeat him. After knowing the facts, Nero confronts Abhi and burns the script. After that, he makes a pact with him to raise him as a hero against him, then Nero kills him to sustain his power. Then, as per the plan, Sai stops the crimes of Nero, which results in a fierce confrontation. Meanwhile, Likitha, Somasekhar, and Usha come to meet him, thinking he was in a movie shooting. But, after observing the true situation, they decided to act in front of the village folks as Likitha's parents, who made Abhi act like an orphan. Then, the villagers take the initiative to fix the marriage of Sai and Likitha.

Later, Nero pulls his past adversary, IG Vijay Chakravarthy into the issue. But, after believing the facts, Vijay stands by Sai and adds more fuel to the fire. Then, in a final confrontation, Nero stabs Sai and sends his real identity to Vijay to declare him a cop to save their reputation. However, Abhi manages to survive the fights, with Nero telling him that the last confrontation is a pre-climax in the film. This is the real climax of the film, and Abhi kills Nero in front of Vijay. But, Vijay manages the situation and gives Abhi a new identity, "Erra Balu," to catch Selvamani in 2 hours. Then, coming to the present, Selvamani is under arrest, but he leaves his revenge on Abhi because of his admiration for his acting skills. Later, Vijay assigns Abhi a new task: to catch an international criminal along with him, which hints towards a sequel.

Reception

Raghu Bandi of Indian Express gave 1.5/5 stars and wrote "Vakkantham Vamshi’s writing is poor, illogical and hardly entertains. His direction is equally lackluster." NTV gave 2/5 stars and wrote "The story needs breathing space for all the elements to flourish. Some things look overcooked and overstretched to the level of feeling cringe at every moment. An ordinary routine film in pursuit of becoming Extra Ordinary became silly and pointless."

In her negative review, Neeshita Nyayapati of Hindustan Times called it "most ridiculous film of 2023". BVS Prakash of Deccan Chronicle wrote "After disasters like ‘Maestro’ and ‘Macherla Niyojikavargam’, young actor Nithin has again chosen a lackluster plot ‘Extra’ Ordinary Man which falls flat on its face. It neither boasts of a novel plot nor has an interesting narration." Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu wrote the film "is sometimes smart, sometimes silly and overstretched, but ensures plenty of laughs".
